Direct flights to Mexico — nonstop from Frankfurt and Munich

Two Mexican airports are reachable from Germany without a stopover. Lufthansa flies daily from Frankfurt to Mexico City (MEX) and also serves the capital from Munich nonstop — the shortest connection to the highlands with about twelve hours to go and around eleven hours back. Condor operates year-round flights to Cancún (CUN) and Discover Airlines seasonally from Frankfurt — together around 23 flights per week, with a flight time of eleven to twelve hours. There are no nonstop flights from Munich to Cancún — nor any direct flights from Germany to other Mexican destinations.

Aeroméxico, Mexico's SkyTeam airline, does not fly to any German city but is a good option from Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Rome, and Barcelona — especially if you want to continue with the same booking to Oaxaca, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, or Los Cabos. From Switzerland, Edelweiss flies nonstop from Zurich to Cancún; from Vienna, the route goes via a European hub.

Flight time, time difference, and arrival

With a tailwind, the return flight takes about an hour less than the outbound flight. The daytime flights from Frankfurt land in the afternoon local time; return flights start in the afternoon or evening and reach Germany the following day. The time difference to Mexico City is seven hours in winter and eight in summer — Mexico abolished daylight saving time in 2022; Quintana Roo, with Cancún and Tulum, is one hour ahead of the capital, Baja California Sur one hour behind. Our tip: Stay awake until at least 9 PM on the day of arrival, eat lightly, and plan the first morning without a fixed schedule — in Mexico City, the altitude of 2,240 meters comes with the time change.

Connecting flights — when a stop is worth it

For trips that do not start in Mexico City or Cancún, a connecting flight is often the smarter option. Three ways have proven to be effective:

• Via Mexico City: Lufthansa to MEX, then Aeroméxico, Volaris, or Viva further — ideal for Oaxaca, Chiapas, Mérida, Puerto Vallarta, La Paz, and Los Cabos. Expect at least three hours of connecting time, as you will enter Mexico City, pick up your luggage, and check in again.
• Via a European hub: Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, or London with Iberia, Air France, KLM, British Airways, or Aeroméxico — often cheaper than the direct flight and with connections to Cancún and Mexico City.
• Via the USA or Canada: United via Houston, American via Dallas, Delta via Atlanta — the only way to reach Loreto, Querétaro, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta, or Los Cabos with just one stopover. Total travel time 14 to 18 hours.

Domestic flights — Aeroméxico, Volaris, and Viva

Mexico is a flying country: Between the highlands, Caribbean, Pacific, and Baja California, there are 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers, and domestic flights of one to two and a half hours replace day trips. Three airlines share the market:

• Aeroméxico — Founding member of the SkyTeam alliance, Boeing 737 and 787 on the main routes, hub Terminal 2 in Mexico City. Highest standard, connecting flights can be booked through Air France or KLM tickets.
• Volaris — the largest airline in the country by passengers, ultra-low-cost with bases in Mexico City, Tijuana, and from June 2026 also Puebla. The basic fare includes only hand luggage; checked luggage and seat selection are additional.
• Viva — since 2024, the new name of Viva Aerobus, also ultra-low-cost, strong from Monterrey, Cancún, Mérida, and the new Felipe Ángeles airport. Dense network to the coasts, about 28 flights per week from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido.

From our booking experience, prices for a domestic route including checked luggage are usually between 1,000 and 3,000 MXN (approx. 50–155 EUR) per person one way — considerably more in the week before Christmas, during Semana Santa, and around Día de Muertos. Typical flight times from Mexico City: Oaxaca and Puebla region about 1 hour, Tuxtla Gutiérrez 1 h 45, Puerto Vallarta 1 h 30, Mérida 1 h 50, Cancún and Los Cabos about 2 h 15, La Paz 2 h 20. Between Oaxaca City and the coast, Aerotucán flies twice daily in 40 to 45 minutes with Cessna Caravan aircraft (15 kg luggage limit, from about 1,400–2,500 MXN / 70–130 EUR).

Airports by region — the overview

Which airport belongs to which region, with connections and transfer times (as of September 2026):

Loreto is the only airport in our regions without a connection to Mexico City — you fly here via Tijuana or Los Angeles, or you drive the approximately 360 kilometers from La Paz through the mountains and along the coast. For the Valle de Guadalupe, Tijuana Airport with the pedestrian bridge Cross Border Xpress from San Diego (about 20–30 USD) is often the fastest route.

Transfer from the airport — taxi counters, Uber, and DiDi

The most important rule for all Mexican airports, as also stated by the Foreign Office: Only use official taxis from the counters in the arrival hall or app ride services like Uber and DiDi — never take a taxi that approaches you on the street. The counters (Taxis autorizados) sell rides at a fixed price per zone before you leave the building. In Mexico City, a ride to Polanco or Roma at the counter costs up to 950 MXN (around 48 EUR), with Uber 150–250 MXN (8–13 EUR); the pickup zone for apps is signposted.

In Cancún, Uber is not reliably available at the airport according to our experience — we therefore book a private transfer in advance (to Tulum about 2,300 MXN / 117 EUR per vehicle, 1 h 45). The ADO buses run from both terminals to Tulum (300–420 MXN, 2 to 2.5 hours), the Tren Maya twice daily from the station at the airport (tourist class 449.50 MXN, 1 h 45). In Oaxaca, there is no Uber; the colectivo taxi from the airport costs 135 MXN per person, the single taxi about 245 MXN. In Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the shuttle to San Cristóbal costs around 240 MXN per person, the taxi about 600 MXN.

Luggage, customs, and entry at the airport

Check the fare for long-haul flights: The cheapest economy fares from Lufthansa, Condor, and Discover no longer include checked luggage, while domestic flights from Volaris and Viva only include hand luggage anyway. If you are traveling with two suitcases for highlands and coast, book luggage at the same time — adding it later at the counter is significantly more expensive. For Aerotucán to the Oaxaca coast, there is a limit of 15 kilograms.

Upon arrival, immigration comes first: German citizens do not need a visa, the immigration authority sets the length of stay between 1 and 180 days — verify the granted days at the counter or e-gate before proceeding. The FMM form is no longer issued for air travel; the passport must still be valid for at least six months upon entry. All details in our guide Entry to Mexico . Then comes customs: Your luggage is scanned and occasionally opened at random.

For the return flight, we recommend being at the airport three hours before departure — security checks in Cancún and Mexico City are slow during peak times, and the airport tax TUA is already included in your ticket; there is no separate departure fee. Booking time and flight prices 2026

Direct flights to Mexico are limited: one Lufthansa flight per day to Mexico City, few frequencies to Cancún. Consequently, prices rise early. From our booking experience, we recommend securing long-haul flights for the high season — Christmas and New Year, February and March, Semana Santa (2027: March 21 to 28) and Día de Muertos — four to six months in advance; for May, June, and September to mid-November, often two to three months are sufficient. As a guideline, an economy round trip from Germany in 2026 is about 750 to 1,000 EUR in the low season, in the high season around 1,200 to 1,700 EUR; premium economy starts at around 1,500 EUR, business class at about 3,000 EUR. Connecting flights via Madrid or Amsterdam are often 150 to 300 EUR cheaper than the nonstop flight.
