Visa for Mexico — do you need one?

No. Citizens of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland can enter for tourism, business trips, and transit without a visa — for stays of up to 180 days. There is no prior registration and no electronic travel authorization; you only need a valid passport. For a Mexico tour of two or three weeks, entry is as easy as in hardly any other country in Latin America.

An important detail that many overlook: The 180 days are the maximum, not the rule. The duration of stay is determined by the immigration authority INM upon entry — according to the Federal Foreign Office, "it can be between 1 and 180 days." In practice, tourists with a return ticket receive the full or a generous period; those who want to stay longer should kindly express this and have their hotel bookings with them.

Staying longer than 180 days, working, or studying?

Then you need a visa, which you apply for at the Mexican consulate in Berlin, Frankfurt, Vienna, or Bern before traveling. For vacation trips, even with mobile working in the hotel, this does not matter.

FMM — what happened to the tourist card

For decades, every traveler received the Forma Migratoria Múltiple, a paper tourist card, on the plane, which had to be guarded like an eye until departure. That is history: According to the Federal Foreign Office (as of September 5, 2026), the FMM is no longer required for entry by air. At the major airports — Mexico City (MEX), Cancún (CUN), Mérida, Los Cabos — you pass automated gates with a biometric passport or receive a stamp from the officer indicating the number of granted days.

For entry by land, the tourist card still applies: Those entering from the USA, Guatemala, or Belize fill it out online or at the border and pay the fee. For trips with Latin Memories, this is only relevant if you reach the Valle de Guadalupe via San Diego and the pedestrian bridge CBX — the procedure there is routine and takes only a few minutes.

The fee is included in the airfare

You do not pay the Mexican entry fee for non-residents (Derecho de No Residente) separately when flying — it is included in the ticket price and appears there as a tax. Only at land borders is it collected on-site; stays of up to seven days are free of charge there.

Passport, return ticket, and documents

According to the Federal Foreign Office, the passport must be at least six months valid at the time of entry — an ID card is not sufficient, not even for onward travel from the USA. Damaged passports, detached pages, or a torn chip cover can lead to entry refusal; those who are unsure are better off applying for a new passport. A return or onward travel ticket may be requested and will be checked at check-in in Germany anyway.

Customs — Duty-free allowances, cash, and prohibitions

The Mexican customs authority ANAM allows additional goods worth up to 500 USD to be duty-free besides personal luggage — upon entry by air, ship, or land, with purchase receipts. For vacationers, the amounts for alcohol and tobacco and the prohibition of certain natural products are particularly relevant:

Export — what cannot go in the luggage

Shells, corals, sand, and anything that even resembles a pre-Columbian find must remain in Mexico — export is punishable. Mezcal and tequila are allowed: Upon return to the EU, 1 liter of spirits over 22 percent or 2 liters under 22 percent, 4 liters of wine, 200 cigarettes, and goods up to 430 EUR are duty-free — a bottle of Fortaleza or mezcal from Matatlán fits, the second bottle incurs duty.

Entry via the USA — ESTA also when transiting

If you fly to Mexico via Houston, Dallas, Miami, or Los Angeles, you legally enter the USA — even if you only sit in the transit area for two hours. You need a valid ESTA for this, which US authorities recommend be applied for at least 72 hours before departure according to the Federal Foreign Office; it has a fee (raised to 40 USD by 2025), is valid for two years, and can only be applied for through the official website esta.cbp.dhs.gov. In the USA, you pick up your luggage, go through customs and immigration, and check it in again — plan for at least two and a half hours of layover time.

Traveling with children, with pets, and across the land border

Minors

Children with their own passport can enter accompanied by both parents without further formalities. If a child travels with only one parent, with grandparents, or alone, the Federal Foreign Office recommends a declaration of consent from the non-traveling parent as well as copies of their passports and the birth certificate — preferably in Spanish or English and certified. The control usually takes place at the airline, not at the INM counter.

Pets

Dogs and cats are allowed to enter as personal luggage according to customs authority ANAM — up to three animals with health certificates; the control is handled by the veterinary authority SENASICA at the airport. The Federal Foreign Office advises checking the current requirements directly with SENASICA before booking. For a round trip with domestic flights and boutique hotels, we honestly advise against it.

By land from the USA, Guatemala, or Belize

At land borders, you fill out the FMM and pay the entry fee; without a stamp, you may not leave the country. The border crossing San Diego–Tijuana via the pedestrian bridge CBX is the only one we use in our programs — for the wine valley in Baja California . From traveling to the border area of Chiapas to Guatemala, the Federal Foreign Office advises against it except for Federal Highway 307.

Departure, Visitax, and the German Embassy

When departing by airplane, there is no longer a form — the departure tax is included in the ticket. Expect long lines at check-in and security control at MEX and CUN airports: Three hours before a long-haul flight is not an exaggerated buffer. Those departing from Quintana Roo — Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox, Mayakoba — should also pay attention to the Visitax: a tourist fee imposed by the state, which according to state law applies to all foreign guests and must be paid online via the official portal visitax.gob.mx before departure. Pay only there, not with third-party providers with surcharges.

German Embassy and Consulates

In case of loss of passport, accident, or illness, the embassy in Mexico City is your point of contact; honorary consuls — among others in Puebla — assist on-site. For a replacement passport, a copy of the passport, a passport photo, and the police report of the loss help — that’s why the copy belongs in the cloud.
