What does a trip to Colombia really cost?

A question that almost every traveler asks us — and the answer surprises most: Colombia offers a remarkably good price-performance ratio. The general price level is about 42 percent below that of Germany. A cappuccino for 1.50 EUR instead of 3.50 EUR, a complete lunch in a local restaurant for 3 to 5 EUR, an upscale dinner in Bogotá or Cartagena for under 35 EUR per person — Colombia makes it possible.

For discerning travelers, this concretely means: You stay in a lovingly restored boutique hotel in colonial style for the price of a simple chain hotel in Central Europe. You enjoy an 8-course tasting menu in the best restaurant in the country for 149 EUR — a fraction of what a comparable experience would cost in Berlin or Vienna.

Important to know: The costs of a trip to Colombia vary regionally significantly. Cartagena's old town is 40 to 60 percent above the level of Bogotá or Medellín. The coffee region and smaller towns are the cheapest. Our experience shows: Those who plan their Colombia tour wisely can strategically take advantage of this price differential — without sacrificing quality.

Colombia vacation budget: daily costs by travel style

How much does a day in Colombia cost? It largely depends on how you want to travel. The range is from 33 to over 300 USD per person — and even in the upscale segment, the quality is remarkably high.

Backpacker — about 20-33 USD/day

Hostel dormitory (10-15 USD), street food, and Menu del Dia (5-8 USD), public buses, selected activities. Colombia is among the cheapest countries in South America for budget travelers — for the sake of completeness, we include this category here.

Comfort and upscale style — from 55-120 USD/day

Boutique hotel or cozy finca (50-100 USD), all meals in good restaurants (20-30 USD), coffee tours, national park entries, occasional taxis and domestic flights. Our assessment: This is the ideal entry point for travelers who value quality and authenticity without overspending.

Premium tour with private guide — from 180-374 USD/day

Handpicked boutique accommodations and luxury hotels (150-300 USD), upscale restaurants, private transfers, German-speaking guide, all entries and experiences included. With a tailor-made round trip with Latin Memories, all services on-site are included — you focus on the experience, we take care of the rest.

Note

The mentioned daily budgets refer to your local Colombia prices — excluding the international flight. Detailed information on flight costs to Colombia can be found in our guide to Getting there and flights. The best travel time also plays a role: In high season (December to January, Semana Santa), you should expect a surcharge of 15 to 25 percent.

Accommodation costs — from the finca to the luxury hotel

Accommodation is usually the largest item in the travel budget. What many do not know: Colombia has an impressive selection of boutique hotels, historic haciendas, and stylish fincas — at prices that are remarkably moderate compared to Europe or Costa Rica.

Colonial-style boutique hotel in Cartagena's old town with courtyard pool and tropical plants

Accommodations by category Prices per night, double room. As of 2025/2026, season-dependent.

How much do accommodations cost in the main regions?

  • Cartagena: Hotel Casa San Agustin (Leading Hotels of the World) from 322 USD/night. Sofitel Legend Santa Clara from 290 USD. Mansion Tcherassi from 279 USD. Those looking for colonial flair without top prices will find stylish boutique hotels in Getsemani from 80 USD.
  • Bogotá: Four Seasons Casa Medina from 260 USD/night — one of only two Four Seasons hotels in Latin America. Solid mid-range in Chapinero from 60 USD.
  • Medellín: Boutique hotels in El Poblado from 82 USD (574 Hotel) to 547 USD (The Charlee with rooftop pool). Patio del Mundo from 301 USD.
  • Coffee region: Hacienda Venecia from 106 USD/night including breakfast and unlimited fresh coffee. Hotel Kawa Mountain Retreat with panoramic views from 84 USD.
  • Tayrona region: Playa Koralia, an eco-lodge right on the beach, from 122 USD/night.

Insider tip: Location and timing matter

We recommend paying close attention to location: In Cartagena, the old town (Walled City) costs 2 to 3 times that of the adjacent Getsemani — with comparable quality and only a five-minute walk difference. In the coffee region, stays during the week (Monday to Thursday) can be up to 20 percent cheaper, as Colombian city dwellers from Medellín and Bogotá travel there on weekends. Another tip: Book Hacienda Venecia directly on their own website — this saves 10 to 15 percent compared to booking platforms.

Food and restaurants — from street markets to fine dining

Colombia's culinary scene has undergone considerable development in recent years. From freshly baked empanadas on the street corner to award-winning tasting menus in Bogotá — the range is enormous, and prices for tourists are surprisingly moderate.

Our insider tip: the Menu del Dia

The Menu del Dia is one of the most beautiful aspects of Colombian daily life for us: Daily from 12 to 2 PM, local restaurants serve a complete three-course menu — soup, main course with rice, beans, and meat, fresh fruit juice, often even a dessert. The price? Between 8,000 and 20,000 COP (1.80 to 4.60 EUR), most often around 15,000 COP (~3.40 EUR). In other words: For the price of a cup of coffee in Frankfurt, you can enjoy a complete lunch in Colombia. There are regional differences: In Santa Marta from 8,000 COP, in Cartagena's tourist old town rarely under 15,000 COP.

For foodies: Restaurant Leo in Bogotá

Restaurant Leo in Bogotá under chef Leonor Espinosa regularly ranks among the best restaurants in Latin America. The 8-course tasting menu costs 649,000 COP (~149 EUR) — for this caliber, an extraordinary price-performance ratio. We recommend reserving at least four to six weeks in advance. In Cartagena we recommend Carmen and Celele (80,000 to 150,000 COP per person) as top addresses for upscale Colombian cuisine.

Transport and domestic flights — Colombia prices for tourists

Colombia is larger than Germany and France combined — many travelers underestimate this. For a round trip, domestic flights are therefore almost indispensable, and the good news: They are pleasantly affordable. Whether flight, bus, or private transfer — the right choice depends on the route and your time budget.

Domestic flights (one way, economy) Prices when booked early (4-6 weeks in advance). Later bookings can be 2-3 times more expensive.

Bus, taxi, and transfer Prices as of 2025/2026.

Comparison: Bogota → Cartagena Bogota → Cartagena

How to save on domestic flights

Our experience: Book four to six weeks before departure — mid-week (Wednesday or Thursday) offers the best prices. With Wingo and JetSmart, be sure to book luggage online; at the airport, you'll pay three times more. For round travelers with a normal suitcase (23 kg), Avianca or LATAM, despite higher base prices, are often the more economical choice when considering luggage costs. You can find detailed information about all airlines and routes in our guide Travel and flights to Colombia.

Note

We recommend always using app-based services like Uber, InDriver, or Cabify in Colombian cities. Street taxis without meters may charge tourists exorbitantly. In Bogota, Uber works reliably. You can find more practical tips in our guide to Safety in Colombia.

Tours, guides, and national parks

From the coffee tour in the Andes to trekking to Ciudad Perdida and diving in the Caribbean sea — Colombia offers a variety of experiences that few other countries in South America can match. Here are the most important activity costs at a glance.

Activities and admissions Prices as of 2025/2026. National park entrance fees may be adjusted annually.

In-depth information can be found in our specialized guides on National Parks in Colombia, Diving and snorkeling and birdwatching — Colombia is home to more than 1,900 bird species, more than any other country in the world.

Ciudad Perdida: Fixed price is a matter of trust

The Ciudad Perdida trek has a uniform fixed price — all four licensed providers (Turcol, Expotur, Magic Tour, Wiwa Tour) charge exactly the same. If you receive a cheaper offer, you're dealing with an unscrupulous provider. Included in the fixed price are all meals, overnight stays, transport, guide, insurance, and entrance.

Tip: Book directly at the source

For coffee tours in Salento, it is best to book directly at the finca — this saves 20 to 30 percent compared to booking platforms like GetYourGuide. Finca Don Eduardo and Finca El Ocaso are even reachable on foot from Salento. We recommend visiting the Tayrona National Park in the off-season: The entrance fee is about 4 EUR cheaper, and you experience the park without crowds.

Colombia currency: Peso, exchange rate, and payments

The national currency is the Colombian Peso (COP) — and the large numbers on the bills can initially confuse any traveler. The most important reference: The current exchange rate (as of March 2026) is about 1 EUR = 4,350 to 4,450 COP. A handy rule of thumb that quickly sticks: 10 EUR is about 44,000 COP, and 1,000 COP is about 23 cents.

Colombian peso bills and credit card next to a coffee in a cafe in Bogota

Credit cards are widely accepted in major cities and tourist areas — Mastercard (55 percent market share in Colombia) slightly more often than Visa. In rural areas like Minca, the Tayrona accommodations, or smaller Caribbean villages, card payment is often not possible. Smaller businesses may also charge an additional 3 to 5 percent for card payments.

ATMs (Cajeros) can be found in all larger cities. One important note: ATM fees and withdrawal limits vary significantly depending on the bank.

600,000 COP

Our ATM strategy for you

Use Banco de Bogota or Davivienda — these allow withdrawals of up to 2,000,000 COP (~455 EUR) per transaction. This way, you only pay the fee once instead of four times with Bancolombia (where the limit is only 600,000 COP). Even smarter: Use a travel credit card with no foreign transaction fees — such as DKB, Wise, or Revolut. For example, Wise offers two free withdrawals per month.

Caution: Avoid dynamic currency conversion

At the ATM, you will be asked if you want to pay in Colombian Pesos or in your home currency. Always choose Colombian Pesos (COP). The option "Pay in Euros" sounds convenient but costs an 8 to 9 percent surcharge due to a significantly worse exchange rate. This note applies equally when paying by card in restaurants or hotels.

Plan cash thoughtfully

Before traveling to remote areas like Tayrona, the Pacific coast, or the Amazon, we strongly recommend withdrawing enough cash in the next major city. In some regions, you won’t find a single ATM for 100 kilometers. Currency exchange offices at the airport also offer significantly worse rates than official Casas de Cambio in city centers. We advise against street exchangers (Cambistas) — they operate illegally and to your detriment. More tips for safe money handling can be found in our guide to Safety in Colombia.

Flight to Colombia costs: What to plan for your arrival

Flight costs are a significant item in the overall budget — and the good news: They have dropped significantly in recent years. Since November 2024, both Lufthansa and Avianca have been flying nonstop from Frankfurt to Bogota, which has increased competition and reduced prices by about 30 percent.

Flights Germany → Colombia (round trip) Prices for round trips, as of 2025/2026. Optimal booking time: 3-6 months before departure.
