Direct flights, airport strategy & domestic flights

The flight to Colombia is shorter than many think: From Frankfurt, you land in Bogotá in just under 12 hours — since November 2024, both Lufthansa and Avianca fly nonstop. For those starting from other German cities, the most common layover is in Madrid, Amsterdam, or Panama City, taking 14 to 18 hours. In this guide, you will find everything about flight planning: current direct connections, the choice of Bogotá or Cartagena as an entry airport, the most important domestic flights, and specific price ranges starting from 500 EUR in the off-season.

Flight to Colombia: The essentials at a glance

The flight to Colombia is shorter than many think: From Frankfurt, you land in Bogotá in just under 12 hours — without layovers. Since November 2024, both Lufthansa and Avianca fly nonstop from Frankfurt to Bogotá, which has reduced prices on this route by about 30 percent. From Munich, Avianca offers another seasonal direct flight.

Those starting from Berlin, Düsseldorf or other German cities typically have one layover — most frequently in Madrid, Amsterdam or Panama City. The total travel time is then 14 to 18 hours, depending on the connection and layover time.

Colombia is larger than Germany and France combined. For a Colombia circular trip domestic flights are therefore almost indispensable: Bogotá to Cartagena is 1,000 kilometers in a straight line — by bus, it takes 18 hours, by flight only one and a half. Below, we explain which domestic routes are relevant for your itinerary and what they cost.

Note

Good news for 2025/2026: Since Avianca's direct flight started from Frankfurt in November 2024, the competitive situation has improved significantly. Two airlines now offer nonstop connections from Germany — and prices are lower than ever. Those who choose their travel time wisely, can fly in the off-season round trip starting at 500 EUR.

For travelers from southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the Edelweiss flight from Zurich is an interesting alternative — including free baggage and meals, and with a continuing flight directly to Cartagena.

Those who do not get a direct flight or start from Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg or Cologne will have a layover in one of these hubs:

  • Madrid (MAD): Iberia and Air Europa fly daily nonstop to Bogotá (about 9:30 hrs). Often the cheapest option — and no US visa required.
  • Amsterdam (AMS): KLM flies 7x weekly nonstop to Bogotá. Good connectivity from northern Germany.
  • Panama City (PTY): Copa Airlines connects via its hub in Panama — Condor markets these connections from Frankfurt, Berlin, and Düsseldorf as "flights to Colombia," but they are not direct flights.
  • Miami / New York: US airlines such as American and United offer layover connections — but require a US visa or ESTA.

Direct flight vs. layover — which is worth it?

The direct flight usually costs 50 to 150 EUR more than the cheapest layover connection, but saves 4 to 6 hours of travel time. For a two to three-week circular trip, this extra cost is almost always worth it. For connections via Madrid, the time difference is the smallest: total travel time is only about 14 hours including layover.

Insider tip

Condor promotes flights to Bogotá from Frankfurt, Berlin, and Düsseldorf — but these are not direct flights. The connection goes through Panama City with Copa Airlines as a partner. From Berlin, the total travel time is about 20 hours. Those wanting a real nonstop flight must fly from Frankfurt or Munich.

Insider tip

The cheapest flight months are April/May and October/November — round trip from Frankfurt starting at 500 EUR. In high season (December, July/August), you will pay 900 to 1,400 EUR. Tip: Set up a price alert on Google Flights or Skyscanner and book 3 to 6 months before departure. More about the best travel time for Colombia.

Bogotá or Cartagena: Which entry airport fits your itinerary?

One of the most important decisions in flight planning: Where to enter Colombia? Bogotá (BOG) and Cartagena (CTG) are the two relevant entry airports — with very different pros and cons.

Entry Bogotá (El Dorado) — ideal if...

Bogotá is by far Colombia's most important hub: Over 45 million passengers yearly, all international airlines, and a dense network of domestic flights to every destination in the country. Choose Bogotá as your entry airport if:

  • Your circular trip includes Bogotá itself
  • You are planning domestic flights to Medellín, to the Coffee region or to Cano Cristales You are looking for the cheapest transatlantic price
  • You want maximum flexibility with domestic connections
  • Entry Cartagena — ideal if...

Cartagena

has significantly fewer international connections and no direct flight from Germany. However, Rafael Nunez Airport (CTG) is only 6 km from the city center — a big advantage for a quick start to the vacation. Choose Cartagena if:Your trip is solely focused on the Caribbean region (Cartagena +

  • You do not wish to visit Bogotá
  • You want to start directly with the Caribbean experience

Open-Jaw: inbound and outbound flights different

The smartest option for the classic Colombia round trip (Bogota → Medellin → Coffee Region → Caribbean): Book an Open-Jaw ticket — inbound flight to Bogota, outbound flight from Cartagena. This way, you save the costly return flight on the same route and can logically plan your route from the Andes to the coast. The price difference to a normal round-trip ticket is surprisingly small or even zero.

Insider tip

At Latin Memories, we typically include Open-Jaw routings in the travel planning. This not only saves you the unnecessary return flight to Bogota but also makes the entire travel route more logical and relaxed.Request now without obligation — we advise you on the optimal flight route.

From Bogota airport to the city center

After landing at El Dorado airport, several transfer options to the city center are available. The airport is about 15 km from the center — without traffic, it takes 20 to 30 minutes; during rush hour (7-9 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.), up to 90 minutes.

Note

Anyone who has a domestic flight with Satena or Clic Air upon arrival (e.g., to La Macarena for Cano Cristales), must switch to Terminal 2 (Puente Aereo). The free shuttle runs every 20 minutes — plan for at least 60 minutes of transfer time.

Domestic flights in Colombia — the most important routes

For a round trip through Colombia, domestic flights are almost indispensable. The distances between the highlights are enormous — and the roads through the Andes are time-consuming. Fortunately, the domestic flight network is well-developed and the prices are moderate.

Attention

Baggage with Wingo and JetSmart must always be booked online — at the airport, you pay up to three times as much. For round travelers with a normal suitcase (23 kg), Avianca or LATAM are often cheaper despite a higher base price when including baggage fees. Tip: Book domestic flights 3 to 6 weeks before departure and choose midweek (Wednesday/Thursday) — weekends and Colombian holidays are significantly more expensive.

Travel to Salento and the Coffee Region

The Coffee region around Salento can be reached via Armenia Airport (AXM, about 30 km away) or Pereira (PEI, about 27 km). Armenia is the better choice: Buses leave every 20 minutes to Salento (5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., about 7,000 COP / 1.50 EUR). From Armenia airport, first take a short taxi to the bus station (about 11,000 COP), then take the bus to Salento.

Alternatively: The night bus from Bogota to Armenia takes 7 to 8 hours (from about 13 USD) — a popular option to save a hotel night and arrive in the coffee region in the morning.

Travel to Tayrona National Park

The Tayrona National Park is located 34 km east of Santa Marta. Fly from Bogota to Santa Marta (SMR, about 1:30 hours, from 36 USD), then by taxi to the park entrance El Zaino (about 45 minutes, 90,000 COP / about 20 EUR) or by public bus (about 1 hour, 12,000 COP). Those coming from Cartagena can alternatively take the bus — travel time about 4 to 5 hours.

Travel to Cano Cristales

Cano Cristales can only be reached by small aircraft — there is no road connection for tourists. Satena and Clic Air fly from Bogota to La Macarena (IATA: LMC) in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The propeller planes have only about 32 seats and fly a few times a week — tickets are quickly sold out during the season (mid-June to early November).

Attention

When booking the Satena flight, definitely use the correct IATA code: LMC for La Macarena — not EYP (Yopal), a common mix-up. Satena tickets are often not available on major booking platforms — best to book directly at satena.com. And: Cano Cristales is only open from mid-June to early November. Best months: July and August.

Insider tip

Credit card issue: European credit cards are often rejected on the websites of Avianca and LATAM. It's better to book domestic flights through Google Flights, Kiwi.com, or Kayak — EU cards work more reliably there. Alternatively, leave the booking to your travel agent.

Bus and overland: Alternatives to flying

Colombia's long-distance bus network is well developed — double-decker buses from Expreso Bolivariano or Expreso Brasilia offer comfortable reclining seats with plenty of legroom (First Class). For short to medium distances, the bus can be a sensible alternative:

Note

Bus trips over 5 hours should be replaced with a domestic flight — the time advantage is enormous and the price difference is often minimal. The bus from Bogotá to Cartagena takes almost a whole day, a flight only one and a half hours for similar money (bus from 45 USD, flight from 33 USD). One exception: The night bus Bogotá → Armenia saves a hotel night and brings you to the coffee region early in the morning.
