Flight Routes, new LIM Terminal & Domestic Flights to Cusco and Iquitos

There is no direct flight from Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Vienna, or Zurich to Lima — and that is the first question every Peru traveler clarifies. The alternative is good: Iberia and Air Europa fly Madrid–Lima nonstop in about 12.5 hours, KLM connects Amsterdam–Lima daily, Air France Paris–Lima nonstop. Anyone planning a Peru trip has three clear main routes plus the longer USA variant. This guide shows all routes, flight times, domestic flights to Cusco or Iquitos, the opening of the new LIM terminal in 2025, and honest price ranges.

Is there a direct flight from Germany to Peru?

No. Currently there is no nonstop flight from the German-speaking region to Lima. Lufthansa, Condor, and others offer connections with a stopover only. The fastest and most comfortable option: Iberia from Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, or Berlin via Madrid with seamless connection to the Madrid–Lima nonstop flight. Total travel time from Frankfurt: about 15–16 hours including layover.

Iberia via Madrid — the fastest option

Iberia operates the Madrid–Lima route with an Airbus A350-900, 14 frequencies a week in the winter 2025/26 schedule. The airline is a member of the oneworld alliance and cooperates closely with British Airways. Advantages: fastest total travel time from DACH, good connection options in Madrid (short distances, intra-Schengen). Booking Frankfurt-Lima directly with Iberia is usually cheaper than separate bookings.

KLM via Amsterdam

KLM flies daily AMS–LIM with Boeing 777 or 787-9. Schiphol is one of the most pleasant transfer airports in Europe — short distances, good lounges, fast feeder flights from DACH. Air France and KLM share the code-share, a booking through Air France on the Frankfurt–Amsterdam–Lima route is possible.

Air France via Paris

Air France operates CDG–LIM with Boeing 777, about 7× per week. Charles de Gaulle has more complexity than Madrid or Amsterdam (Terminal 2E to 2E intra-Schengen transfer) — choose a minimum transfer time generously, ideally 90+ minutes.

US Transit (American, United, Delta) — ESTA requirement

American Airlines, Delta, United, and LATAM via Miami, JFK, Houston or Atlanta connect DACH with Lima. Advantage: often cheap fares, with Delta/United strong Lufthansa cooperation for FRA-Hub. Disadvantage: longer total travel time (16–20 h), and important: Even for pure transit you need an ESTA.

ESTA since September 2025: 40 USD instead of 21 USD

The USA increased the ESTA fee in September 2025 from 21 USD to 40 USD. The ESTA is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, is also required for pure US transit, and must be applied for at least 72 hours before departure — we recommend 7–14 days in advance. Application only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not through third-party sites (often overpriced).

Direct flight Madrid–Lima with Iberia & Air Europa

The Madrid–Lima connection is the only nonstop route from Europe to Peru from continental Europe that is practical for DACH travelers with a short feeder flight. Iberia and Air Europa share this route, both with modern wide-body aircraft.

Insider tip: Combine Madrid as a stopover

Iberia allows a stopover in Madrid for 1–2 nights without extra cost with many fares. For those who want to stretch the journey, planning 1–2 nights in Madrid (tapas tours in La Latina, Prado Museum, a day in Toledo) — and has already half overcome the jet lag before the actual long-haul flight begins. The Madrid–Lima connection usually departs in the afternoon and arrives in Lima in the evening, which is ideal for a first acclimatization night in Lima.

Flight time Germany – Lima

The total travel time depends heavily on the stopover location and wait time. Realistic ranges:

Route

Airline

Total travel time

Frankfurt – Madrid – Lima

Iberia

14 h 30 min – 16 h

Munich – Madrid – Lima

Iberia

15 h – 16 h 30 min

Frankfurt – Amsterdam – Lima

KLM

14 h 45 min – 16 h

Frankfurt – Paris – Lima

Air France

15 h – 17 h

Frankfurt – Miami – Lima

American Airlines

17 h – 19 h

Vienna – Madrid – Lima

Iberia

16 h – 17 h

Zurich – Madrid – Lima

Iberia / Swiss-Code-share

15 h 30 min – 17 h

Return flights from Lima are usually shorter than outbound flights due to jet streams — Madrid–Lima 12 h 25 min, Lima–Madrid 11 h 30 min.

Jorge Chávez Airport Lima — new terminal since June 2025

The Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) is by far Peru's most important airport — practically all international and national air traffic flows through it. On June 1, 2025, the long-awaited new terminal was opened — built by Lima Airport Partners (Fraport AG holds a majority stake).

Key data of the new LIM terminal:

  • 270,000 m² area (more than four times the old terminal)
  • Capacity for 40 million passengers per year (previously: 16 million)
  • Architectural reference to the hummingbird geoglyph of the Nazca lines
  • First airport in South America with digital apron management system
  • Seismic isolators — relevant for the earthquake-prone region
  • 38 boarding gates, 28 with jet bridges
  • Extended lounges (Iberia/oneworld, KLM/SkyTeam, LATAM)

Good to know: T1 vs. T2 orientation

International arrivals and the majority of departures have been operating from the new terminal since June 2025 (officially still referred to as "LIM"). Some domestic flights continue to use the older terminal area — check your boarding pass for the exact boarding area. The internal pathways in the new terminal are spacious but long — plan for about 10-15 minutes to the furthest gate after security control. The old terminal is only a few hundred meters away and is accessible by shuttle if needed.

Lima to Cusco — flight or train?

The most important connection question upon arrival in Lima: How do you get to Cusco? The fastest, easiest, and best option for most travelers is the domestic flight Lima–Cusco — about 1 hour 20 minutes flight time over the Andes.

Domestic flight Lima–Cusco with LATAM, SKY & JetSMART

Three airlines operate the route several times a day:

  • LATAM Peru — largest network, most reliable booking with European cards, higher fares, oneworld partner for Iberia connecting tickets
  • SKY Airline Peru — cheap, stricter baggage policy
  • JetSMART Peru — cheap, smallest aircraft (A320), often the lowest fares

Fare range Lima–Cusco one-way: 60–180 USD, depending on the season and booking lead time. The first flights depart around 5 AM — and for good reason: Cusco is a highland airport with challenging weather conditions, the morning is meteorologically the most stable.

PeruRail & Inca Rail — what the train really connects

A common misconception: There is no direct train from Lima to Cusco. PeruRail and Inca Rail operate the route Cusco → Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) as well as Cusco → Puno and Cusco → Arequipa (Andean Explorer, Belmond, seasonal).

A true rail connection Lima–Huancayo (12 hours) exists via the Ferrocarril Central Andino — it is one of the highest railway lines in the world (4,781 m at Ticlio Pass), but is only operated seasonally as a tourist experience. For most travelers, it is not a practical option for the Lima-Cusco connection.

Important: Altitude sickness on direct flights to Cusco

A flight from Lima (154 m) to Cusco (3,399 m) overcomes 3,245 meters in altitude in 90 minutes — the body has no time to adjust. About every second traveler experiences mild AMS symptoms within the first 24 hours. Recommendation: One night in Lima for recovery, then directly after landing in Cusco proceed to the Sacred Valley (Urubamba, 2,860 m) — that's 500 meters lower sleeping altitude, which makes a big difference. More in the Altitude sickness guide.

Domestic flights Peru — LATAM, SKY & JetSMART in comparison

Peru is large and rugged — many destinations are only sensibly reachable by flight, foremost Iquitos, the only Peruvian major city destination without a road connection to Lima (Iquitos is located in the Amazon basin, accessible only by boat or plane). Tambopata (via Puerto Maldonado) and the Colca Canyon (via Arequipa) are also flight destinations for travelers on a tight schedule.

Insider Tip: SKY/JetSMART and the EU Credit Card Problem

SKY Airline and JetSMART Peru ask for a RUC number (Peruvian tax identification), which many European credit cards are rejected at checkout. Three workarounds: (1) booking through Skyscanner, Kiwi.com or Momondo (these process payments in Europe). (2) Change the booking to Spanish and enter the passport number in the RUC field — often works. (3) Prefer LATAM — about 20–40 USD more expensive, but reliably bookable. When booking through us as a tour operator, the problem does not occur.

Flight prices and best booking time

Peru has a pronounced seasonality in flight prices — the high season (July/August) is 30–60% above the low season.

Booking timing: 4–6 months before departure is the sweet spot for most DACH dates. For the high season (July/August), ideally book already in January/February of the travel year — Iberia and KLM open their fares about 11 months in advance. Domestic flights in Peru can be booked more relaxed (2–3 months lead time), but not later than 6 weeks during the high season.

Tools for price tracking: Google Flights with price alert, Skyscanner Flexible Date Search, Momondo Trends feature. Those who have flexibility with the dates (±3 days) often save 100–200 € just by doing so.

Baggage — Long haul & domestic flights

On long-haul flights, baggage is usually generous: Iberia, Air France, and KLM allow in Economy 1× 23 kg checked baggage plus 1× 8 kg carry-on included. Air Europa often includes only 1× 8 kg carry-on in basic fares — checked baggage costs extra. For US carriers (American, United, Delta), Economy Basic is standard without checked baggage, with baggage costing 70–80 USD per route.

Domestic flight trap: SKY and JetSMART do not include any checked baggage in their cheapest fares — booking with luggage costs an additional 30–60 USD per flight. LATAM is more transparent here.

Insider Tip: Leave main suitcase in Lima or Cusco

If you are flying from Lima to Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado and returning after 3–5 days, it is best to pack a small travel backpack (15–20 liters) with essentials and leave the main suitcase at the Lima accommodation. Practically all mid-range and premium hotels in Lima store luggage for several days free of charge. This saves domestic flight fees and reduces the burden on often short domestic flights with limited baggage policy.
