Flight to Brazil: Direct flights, flight time & arrival strategy
Direct flights, airport strategy & domestic flights
Direct flights, airport strategy & domestic flights
A flight to Brazil is shorter than many think: Lufthansa and LATAM connect Frankfurt daily nonstop with Sao Paulo (GRU), Lufthansa also flies directly to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) five times a week — flight time is approximately 11 to 12 hours. For the Northeast, TAP Air Portugal via Lisbon is often the smarter choice. Since Brazil is almost as large as Europe, domestic flights with LATAM, Gol or Azul from about 50 EUR are part of every round trip. This guide shows which arrival airport fits your route, how open-jaw tickets can save unnecessary domestic legs, and when you should book.
Flight to Brazil: The essentials at a glance
A flight to Brazil is shorter than many think: From Frankfurt, you land in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro in just under 12 hours — without a layover. Lufthansa and LATAM fly daily nonstop from Frankfurt to Sao Paulo, Lufthansa also connects Frankfurt directly with Rio de Janeiro five times a week.
Brazil is almost as large as all of Europe. For a Brazil round trip domestic flights are therefore indispensable: Sao Paulo to Manaus in the Amazon is 2,700 kilometers as the crow flies — by bus, it would take over 50 hours, by flight only three and a half. LATAM, Gol, and Azul operate a dense domestic flight network with affordable fares from about 50 EUR per leg.
Decisive for your travel route is the choice of the arrival airport: Sao Paulo (GRU) is the largest hub with the most domestic connections — ideal for onward travel to the south, to the Pantanal or to Manaus. Rio de Janeiro (GIG) is suitable if your journey starts in the city of the Sugar Loaf. For the Northeast — Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza — there’s a clever insider tip: TAP Air Portugal via Lisbon.
Note
Cheapest flight months to Brazil: May to September. During this time, you can find round-trip flights from Frankfurt from 450 to 700 EUR. In the high season (December to February) and especially during Carnival, prices rise to 900 to 1,500 EUR. Tip: Set a price alert on Google Flights and book 3 to 6 months before departure. Direct flights from Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Direct connections to Brazil at a glance
Several airlines connect the German-speaking area nonstop or with a short layover to Brazil:
| Airline | From | To | Frequency | Flight time | Special feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lufthansa | Frankfurt (FRA) | Sao Paulo (GRU) | Daily | approx. 12 hours | Boeing 747/A350 |
| LATAM | Frankfurt (FRA) | Sao Paulo (GRU) | Daily | approx. 12 hours | LA8071 |
| Lufthansa | Frankfurt (FRA) | Rio de Janeiro (GIG) | 5-6 times weekly | approx. 11 hours 45 minutes | Boeing 787 Dreamliner |
| Lufthansa | Munich (MUC) | Sao Paulo (GRU) | 3 times weekly | approx. 12 hours 20 minutes | Airbus A350, daytime flight |
| Condor | Frankfurt, Berlin, etc. | GRU, GIG, Manaus | Multiple times weekly | varies | Partly with layover, from 479 EUR |
For travelers from Austria and Switzerland: Zurich and Vienna have no direct flights to Brazil. The best options are feeders to Frankfurt or Munich (Lufthansa Group) or TAP Air Portugal via Lisbon.
Alternative routes via Lisbon (TAP) — especially for the Northeast
TAP Air Portugal is the European airline with the most connections to Brazil: 13 destinations from Lisbon, including direct flights to Recife (7:50 hours), Fortaleza (7:35 hours), Salvador (8:35 hours), Manaus, Florianopolis, and of course Sao Paulo and Rio.
For travel to Brazil's Northeast, TAP is often the smarter choice than taking the detour via Sao Paulo: Frankfurt to Lisbon takes only 3 hours, from there it’s nonstop to Salvador de Bahia — total travel time about 13 hours instead of 15+ hours via Sao Paulo with a domestic flight.
Direct flight vs. layover — is the extra cost worth it?
The nonstop flight to Sao Paulo usually costs 50 to 200 EUR more than a connecting flight via Paris, Amsterdam, or Madrid but saves 3 to 6 hours of travel time. For a two to three-week round trip, this extra cost is almost always worth it. For connections via Lisbon (TAP), the time difference is the least — and often faster than the direct flight to Sao Paulo for the Northeast.
Insider tip
Lufthansa's Munich flight to Sao Paulo is a daytime flight: Departure 11:45 AM, arrival 8:15 PM local time. Ideal for Bavarian and Austrian travelers — you check in directly at the hotel in the evening, without a night on the plane. Flights from Frankfurt depart in the evening (around 9-10 PM) and arrive early in the morning in Brazil.
Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro: Which arrival airport suits your route?
The most important strategic decision when planning your flight: Where to enter Brazil? Sao Paulo (GRU) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG) are the two relevant arrival airports — with very different strengths.
Arrival in Sao Paulo (GRU) — ideal for southern routes
Sao Paulo Guarulhos is Brazil's largest and busiest airport with three terminals. From here, you can reach practically any destination in the country by domestic flight — making GRU the most versatile arrival airport. Choose Sao Paulo if:
- Your round trip includes the Pantanal (via Cuiaba), Manaus or Foz do Iguacu
- You are continuing to Fernando de Noronha (LATAM has been flying directly from GRU since 2024)
- You want to visit Florianopolis in the south
- You want maximum flexibility with domestic connections
Arrival in Rio de Janeiro (GIG) — Gateway to the Northeast and the City
Rio de Janeiro is the logical choice if the city itself is part of your trip. The Galeao Airport (GIG) has fewer domestic connections than GRU but offers good connections to the Northeast. Choose Rio if:
- Your journey begins in Rio de Janeiro
- You want to explore the Northeast from Rio (domestic flights to Salvador, Recife)
- You are planning a round trip Rio → Northeast → back
| Criterion | Sao Paulo (GRU) | Rio de Janeiro (GIG) |
|---|---|---|
| Direct flight from Frankfurt | Yes, daily (LH + LATAM) | Yes, 5-6x/week (LH) |
| Domestic flight network | All destinations accessible | Good, but less than GRU |
| Transfer airport-city | 40-60 min. (25-40 km) | 40-60 min. (15-20 km) |
| Ideal for | Round trips, southern routes, Pantanal, Amazon | Rio stay, northeast |
| Typical price from Frankfurt | from 450 EUR | from 500 EUR |
Open-Jaw: Book inbound and outbound flights differently
The smartest option for many Brazil round trips: Book an Open-Jaw ticket — for example, outbound flight to Rio (GIG), return flight from Sao Paulo (GRU). This saves you the expensive domestic flight between the two cities and allows you to logically plan your route. Example: Rio → Salvador → Recife → Manaus → Sao Paulo → home flight. The price difference to a normal round-trip ticket is surprisingly low.

At Latin Memories, we automatically include Open-Jaw routings in our travel planning. This not only saves an unnecessary domestic flight but also makes the entire travel route more logical and relaxed.Request non-binding now — we advise you on the optimal flight route.
From Sao Paulo airport (GRU) to the city
After landing at Guarulhos airport, multiple transfer options are available. The airport is about 25 to 40 km from the center — without traffic, it's 40 minutes, during rush hour up to 90 minutes.
Transfer Guarulhos Airport (GRU) – city center Guarulhos Airport → city center / Paulista
Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport (GRU)
- Location — Guarulhos, approx. 25-40 km from the center
- Terminals — T1, T2 (Azul int.), T3 (LH/LATAM long-haul)
- Withdraw cash — Bradesco/Banco do Brasil ATM in arrivals
- Wi-Fi — Free Wi-Fi available, Uber app can be used immediately
Attention
Sao Paulo has three airports — confusion possible!GRU (Guarulhos) is the international airport.CGH (Congonhas) is centrally located and serves only domestic flights.VCP (Viracopos near Campinas) is Azul's hub, 100 km to the west. Always check the IATA code when booking domestic flights: A connecting flight from CGH instead of GRU means 1-2 hours of transfer time across the city.
Domestic flights in Brazil — essential for a giant country
Brazil is larger than the entire EU. Anyone visiting more than one region needs domestic flights. Three airlines share the market — and all three are useful in their own way.
Airlines: LATAM, Gol, Azul in comparison
| Airline | Strength | Baggage included? | Best for | Booking for foreigners |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LATAM | Largest network, reliable | No (only hand luggage in Light tariff) | All routes, simplest booking | Problem-free, European cards accepted |
| Gol | Cheap fares, good network | No (Light tariff) | Value for money, main routes | English website: voegol.com → "other countries" |
| Azul | 150+ destinations, remote places | No, but snack/drink included | Fernando de Noronha, Chapada Diamantina | Partially CPF issue, better through Kiwi.com |
All three airlines only offer hand luggage (8-10 kg) in their cheapest fares. Checked baggage (23 kg) must be booked separately — significantly cheaper online (about 30-60 BRL) than at the airport (almost twice as expensive).
Note
Gol filed for bankruptcy in January 2024, but has never ceased operations. The Chapter 11 process was successfully completed in June 2025 — Gol is financially restructured and fully operational again. Bookings with Gol are possible without restrictions.
The most important domestic routes and prices
Most frequent domestic flights from Sao Paulo Prices for one-way, Economy Light tariff. As of 2025/2026, dynamic prices. Baggage extra.
Book domestic flights early — why it's especially important for Brazil
Domestic flights should be booked 2 to 3 months in advance. In high season (Christmas, January, Carnival) much earlier — at least 4 to 6 months. Cheap fares are quickly sold out in high season, especially on popular routes like Sao Paulo–Salvador or Recife–Fernando de Noronha.
Attention
Credit card issue: On the websites of Gol and Azul, European credit cards and missing CPF (Brazilian tax number) can block the booking.Solution: LATAM does not have this problem — EU cards work reliably there. For Gol, use the English website (voegol.com → "other countries"). Azul is best booked through Kiwi.com or Momondo. Or leave the booking to your travel agent.
Insider tip
Brazil Airpass: Gol and Azul offer Airpass products — exclusively bookable outside Brazil. Gol Airpass: 90 days, up to 9 flights, approx. 525 USD. Azul: 15 days / 6 destinations from 499 USD. Worth it for 4 or more domestic flights in a short time. More on total costs in our Cost-and-Budget-Guide.
How to reach every travel destination
Brazil is a continent in itself. Here are the most important travel destinations and how to get there:
Fernando de Noronha — flight via Recife
Fernando de Noronha is only accessible by airplane. The main route goes through Recife (REC): Azul flies 20 to 30 times a week, flight time about 1 hour 15 minutes. Since 2024, LATAM also offers direct flights from Sao Paulo (GRU) — five times weekly, about 3 hours 50 minutes. Prices from 100 to 250 USD one-way. In peak season (December to March), definitely book 6 months in advance.
Lencoeis Maranhenses — flight to Sao Luis
For the Lencoeis Maranhenses you fly to Sao Luis (SLZ) with LATAM, Gol or Azul. From there, it is a 4 to 5 hours onward journey to Barreirinhas — by bus from 60 BRL, by shuttle from 90 BRL per person.
Pantanal — flight to Cuiaba or Campo Grande
The Pantanal can be reached depending on the region via two airports: Cuiaba (CGB) for the north Pantanal and the Transpantaneira, Campo Grande (CGR) for the south Pantanal and Bonito. Both are daily reachable from Sao Paulo. Flight time about 2 hours.
Chapada Diamantina — Flight to Salvador
The Chapada Diamantina is best reached via Salvador. From there, Azul flies twice a week (Thursday and Sunday) to Lencoeis (LEC), flight time approximately 1:15 hours. Alternative: Bus Salvador–Lencoeis, three times daily, approximately 6 hours, from 100 BRL.
Amazon and Manaus — Direct flight or via Sao Paulo
Manaus is accessible by domestic flight from Sao Paulo (GRU) in about 3.5 hours. Alternatively, TAP Air Portugal has been offering flights via Lisbon directly to Manaus since November 2024 (three times weekly). Condor has bookable connections to Manaus from approximately 579 EUR.
Florianopolis — Domestic flight from Sao Paulo
Florianopolis is reachable by domestic flight from Sao Paulo in just 1 hour and 20 minutes. Gol and LATAM offer several daily flights, prices starting from approximately 46 USD. TAP has also been flying Florianopolis directly from Lisbon three times weekly since September 2024.
Flight costs and booking strategy
What does a flight to Brazil cost?
Price range for flights from Germany to Brazil (round trip, economy) Reference values as of 2025/2026. Prices vary based on booking time, airline, and demand.
When is the best time to book?
The optimal booking time is 60 to 80 days before departure to get the cheapest economy fares. For travel during Carnival or the Christmas high season: book 6 to 8 months in advance.
