Our Habitas Bacalar
On the shore of the lagoon of Bacalar, not far from the border with Belize, lies Our Habitas Bacalar on an eight-hectare property between water and Mayan jungle. The lagoon is also known as Laguna de los Siete Colores because the limestone bottom breaks light into up to seven different shades of blue. Thirty-four tent-like A-frame houses stand on raised platforms in the greenery, built from local materials and in traditional construction style, so that the ground beneath remains untouched. There are no televisions, but a daily program of yoga, breathwork, temazcal, and excursions on the lagoon. The house is reserved for adults and has been awarded a MICHELIN Key. If you are looking for the opposite of Cancun, this is the place.
Rooms
All 34 accommodations are A-frame tent rooms with 45 square meters each, freestanding, so you do not share a wall with neighbors. The amenities are the same everywhere: king-size bed, earthy tones, air conditioning, private terrace, and an outdoor shower under the canopy of leaves. They differ in their location on the property. Eight times there are the Lagoon Rooms with unobstructed views of the seven shades of blue, ten times the Lagoon Breeze Rooms, which mix the lagoon and jungle, and eighteen times the Jungle Rooms, which lie furthest in the greenery and offer the most privacy. You will not find a television in any of the houses, that is intentional.
Culinary
Dining is at Siete, a two-story, open restaurant built into the treetops overlooking the lagoon. The menu features fresh ingredients from Quintana Roo and focuses more on plant-based dishes, complemented by regional proteins. In the evenings, it becomes more Mexican and elaborate, with dishes such as aguachile made from shrimp or Yucatecan pork from the wood oven, alongside vegetarian and vegan options. Some of the ingredients come from the property's own garden. For afternoons and evenings, there is a fully equipped bar at the Lagoon Deck, where the Habitas Sunset Sessions with live music also take place.
Activities
The daily program is the real reason to stay here longer. On the water, you can choose from stand-up paddling and SUP yoga, transparent kayaks, catamaran trips, and eFoiling, plus the sunrise tour with the paddleboard, which many guests recall as a highlight. It’s more relaxed with daily yoga in the shala, breathwork, sound healing, janzu as water meditation in the lagoon, and in the temazcal. In the wellness center, treatments feature melipona honey, coconut, and cocoa, much of it from the own garden and processed on-site. Through the Habitas RISE initiative, work is being done to protect the lagoon and its stromatolites, those limestone structures that host some of the oldest life forms on Earth.
Location
Our Habitas Bacalar is located on Carretera Federal 307 near Xul Ha, south of the town of Bacalar in the state of Quintana Roo. Private jungle paths lead over the property to the water, and the house has private access to the lagoon. Chetumal Airport (CTM) is about 30 minutes away, which is the shortest journey, but with limited connections. From Cancun, you drive about four and a half hours south, and from Tulum about two hours. Due to the sandy paths and the location directly by the lagoon shore, the property is only partially suitable for guests with limited mobility.
