Hotel Matilda

In the historic center of San Miguel de Allende, a colonial facade leads into Hotel Matilda, whose interior resembles a gallery more than a city hotel. White walls and understated furniture allow the works of contemporary Mexican artists, some of whom were created specifically for the venue, to take center stage. The beginning of this collection was made by Matilda herself, the mother of the owner, whose portrait painted by Diego Rivera gave the hotel its name. Since its opening in 2010, artists and creatives come here to retreat, many of them repeatedly. At the same time, locals gather here, giving the house a tranquility without isolation. Rooms

No room is the same as another, so the house feels different with each visit. A total of 32 units are spread across several buildings, ranging from around 21 square meters in the Deluxe room to 76 square meters in the largest Owner's Suite. Depending on the location, your room opens to a balcony or a private terrace, or it faces inward towards the architecture of the house. Everywhere, the decor remains understated, with clean lines and smooth surfaces, before which murals and individual works provide the color. This is most evident in the two Owner's Suites, one of which displays blue geometric patterns by architect Luis Fabián Flores on white walls, while the other leads to a terrace with a fire pit and a sculpture by Omar de Regil.

Culinary

The pool serves as the centerpiece of the house, and at its edge, Moxi sets up its tables. A product-related cuisine with Mediterranean accents is served, with ideas stemming from the organic gardens in the vicinity. The small producers who cultivate these gardens are regarded as craftsmen and part of the team in the house. One floor up, Bovine has found its place, a French bistro with its own terrace, where fire dictates the preparation. When night falls, the evening shifts back to the pool at the Monkey Bar, where the Caviartini made from vodka with caviar-filled olives is the most frequently ordered drink.

Activities

Much of what carries the stay takes place in the spa. Its rituals follow five points of well-being, from energy to relaxation. One works with the properties of mezcal, featuring a scrub made of agave nectar and a subsequent wrap of rosemary and arnica. After that, the path continues to the hammam or to the fitness area equipped for strength and endurance training. In the Zen garden, things are quieter, with yoga classes available for all levels, and from here the day continues in a city chosen by Condé Nast Traveler as the best in the world.

Location

The house is located in San Miguel de Allende in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, three blocks from the historic center. The street is one of the most well-known in the city. From there, you can reach the old town on foot, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nearest airport is Querétaro, about 74 kilometers away, while Bajío International Airport in León is approximately 92 kilometers away.
