Hotel Grano de Oro
A bit off the Paseo Colón, San José's main axis, lies the Hotel Grano de Oro behind a facade that reveals little from the street. The house was originally built over a hundred years ago as a residence in the tropical Victorian style and hosted three generations of the Pozuelo family before it became a small boutique hotel. Dark mahogany and handcrafted tiles still characterize the rooms today, while historical photographs and antiques tell stories of the city's past. Anyone walking through the courtyards and green patios hardly notices that the bustling downtown begins just a short walk away, with the international airport about twenty minutes by car. Condé Nast Traveler listed the property in 2023 among the best hotels in Central America and the Caribbean. For guests arriving in the capital before or after a tour of Costa Rica, it is less a stopover than a stay in itself.

Surrounding the courtyards of the old villa are five room categories and three suites, all designed in the style of the house with dark wood and handcrafted tiles. What distinguishes them from each other is less the amenities than the layout: Standard and Superior remain compact, while the Deluxe rooms can accommodate two to four guests depending on bed choice. If you prefer to step outside, the Deluxe Patio with its own green courtyard is perfect, or the Garden Suite, which is in the former family salon and has a hidden private garden. A private staircase leads up to the Vista de Oro Suite, which has a jacuzzi and whose windows overlook the central valley. And if you're traveling with multiple people, the family suite splits into two sleeping areas with a shared bathroom, accommodating up to five people.
Culinary
The Restaurante Grano de Oro started in 1991 as a small corner café mainly serving house guests, but the locals soon joined and stayed. Today, you can choose to sit in the open courtyard or in the large dining room of the historic house. The cooking employs French-Mediterranean techniques and seasonal tropical ingredients, many of which come from small businesses in the vicinity, some just half an hour's drive away. The menu offers house-aged Costa Rican beef as well as sustainably caught fish. Additionally, there is a wine cellar with up to 2,000 bottles and 185 labels, which received a Wine Spectator Award in 2013 as the first in Costa Rica, and finally, the house-made Grano de Oro Pie made from coffee and chocolate.
Activities
On the roof, there is a garden terrace with two whirlpools and sun loungers, which is open to you from the day into the late evening. A fitness room overlooking the sun deck is also part of the house, and for a massage, a simple arrangement with the in-house therapist is enough. Right outside the door begins the city: The Parque La Sabana with its art museum is five jogging minutes away, and you can walk to the bustling center in just a few minutes. For everything beyond that, the concierge team arranges day trips, such as to the Poás volcano with the La Paz Waterfall Gardens or to a coffee plantation with tasting. And if you feel like it, you can go rafting on the Pacuare or take a catamaran to the Nicoya Gulf towards Tortuga Island.

The Hotel Grano de Oro is located in the Central Valley, the central highlands of Costa Rica, in the heart of the capital San José at an altitude of 1150 meters above sea level. Only 20 minutes by car from the international airport and 10 minutes from the national airport, the hotel's location is an ideal starting point for excursions to the cultural highlights of the city with its colonial buildings and vibrant nightlife. At the same time, the numerous natural wonders of the small country, which encompasses five percent of the world's biodiversity in the area of Lower Saxony, await in the nearby surroundings.
