An island full of unusual encounters

In the summer of 2024, I had the great luck to travel to the Galápagos Islands – a destination that is already magical in itself. Everywhere you encounter animals that are found nowhere else in the world: the giant Galápagos tortoises that can live over 100 years, the blue-footed boobies with their bright blue feet, the swimming marine iguanas that accompany you in the water – and of course, the playful sea lions.

On the islands, there are even more sea lions than people, and you notice this immediately: They lie comfortably on park benches in the sun, nap in the middle of the beach, or meet you quite naturally in everyday life. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a pup – just that is already a unique experience.

In the water: playful encounters with curious sea lions

But I was not prepared for how it would feel to encounter them in the water. As soon as I dived, the first curious sea lions appeared next to me. Elegant and playful, they moved through the water, swam closely past me, and seemed just as interested in me as I was in them. They shot past me, did pirouettes, and looked directly at me as if inviting me to join in.

I was not just a bystander – it really felt like, for a moment, I was part of their world.

The clear water, the play of light on the surface, and the special tranquility underwater made this moment unforgettable. It is precisely this closeness to wildlife and the authenticity of nature that make the Galápagos Islands such an extraordinary travel destination.
