PUQIO
PUQIO is the first luxury tent camp in Peru, opened in 2024, and is located one and a half kilometers before the village of Yanque in the middle of the Colca Valley. The idea behind it comes from an article in National Geographic Magazine from January 1934: tent accommodations in the style of the first Andes explorers, but with a wood stove, wall heating, and a freestanding bathtub under the open sky. Eight units are situated on the hillside, with no more than 16 guests at the same time. The centerpiece is a bright lodge where food is cooked over an open fire and served at a large table. Surroundings: terraces from the pre-Inca period, volcanic slopes, and a night sky that has few equals at this altitude.

Rooms
Eight units in three variants are located on the hillside above the valley. The two Carpa Refugio are the most spacious at 60 square meters and feature a separate living area, a terrace, and a separate entryway for boots and equipment. The two Carpa tents measure 56 square meters, while the four Pirca rooms made of adobe bricks are 53 – they are in the front row and offer the best valley view. All units are equipped with a wood stove and wall heating, plus indoor and outdoor showers and a bathtub under the open sky. Guests can choose between a king-size bed and two single beds.
Culinary
Cooking is done over an open fire, and meals are enjoyed at a large table in the bright lodge – Family Style, with what comes from the region. The stay is fully inclusive: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, wine and cocktails, afternoon tea, and snacks in the tent. Since there are never more than 16 guests in the camp at the same time, the evening gathering remains manageable. After dinner, the fire continues to burn outside, and at this altitude, every look upwards is worthwhile.
Activities
Excursions range from two hours to an entire day and are planned individually with you. A classic is the viewpoint Cruz del Cóndor, where the Andean condors glide by at eye level in the morning. Additionally, there are the hot springs of Uyo Uyo, visits to local weavers, rides into the canyon, and hikes with an herbalist who explains the botany of the Andes. The camp provides bicycles and equipment, and massages and wellness treatments are available for an extra charge.
Location
PUQIO is located in the Colca Valley, about a three-hour drive north of Arequipa and about eight hours from Cusco – one and a half kilometers from the village of Yanque. The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest gorges in the world, and at the viewpoint Cruz del Cóndor, the Andean condors circle past at eye level in the morning. The slopes around are covered with terraces dating back to pre-Inca times that are still cultivated today. The camp's excursions include the hot springs of Uyo Uyo, visits to local weavers, rides into the canyon, and hikes with an herbalist. At this altitude, it applies: daytime T-shirt weather, nighttime alpaca blanket.
