Lush tropical garden with tall palm trees and manicured green lawn leading to a modern building, viewed beside the ocean shore under a clear sky.

Arennas Máncora

A little south of the town of Máncora, where it gets quieter along the coast, lies the Arennas Máncora directly on the beach. At low tide, the sea holds back small pools in the rocks along the shore, from which this section takes its name. The facility itself is small and flat, its single-story buildings set among tall palms. These palms and the green areas around them are irrigated with treated water from the in-house treatment plant, and the warm water is heated by the sun through its own collectors. The communal spaces are largely open, allowing the sea breeze to flow through unobstructed.

Rooms

The rooms face either the garden or the sea, and all open through a sliding door, which remains simply open most days, onto a private terrace. They are furnished simply and modern, with wooden floors and natural materials in muted tones, and in the bathroom, the water comes from a rain shower. The suites are in the first row by the beach, some of them with their own diving pool. The Beachfront Pool Villa, with 62 square meters, also comes with a private pool and a patio with an outdoor shower.

Culinary

Part of what is served comes from the land itself, in an organic garden where more than twenty crops grow throughout the year without pesticides. What the garden yields at the moment influences what the kitchen prepares, and seasonal fish also dictate the menu: local catches are processed, considering the closed seasons. You also work with this fish in the ceviche course, where the chef shows you how to cook it in the style of northern Peru in lime juice. If you want to celebrate a special evening, a table is set directly on the beach, where nothing but the crashing waves disturbs the entertainment.

Activities

Right in front of the hotel, surfers and kitesurfers are on the water, and if you prefer a quieter experience, you can try paddle-boarding instead. Further out, boat trips are available when whales pass by off the coast at certain times of the year. A little south, near Los Órganos, an excursion takes you to a spot where you can swim with sea turtles. For shorter distances on land, the hotel suggests using bicycles or your own feet. Back at the house, you can find tranquility through yoga, and in the massage room, aroma oils are used while the sound of crashing waves drifts in from outside.

Location

In the northwest of Peru, the desert of the Piura region extends to the ocean, and the town of Máncora has emerged on the flat fringe before it. Just outside, Playa Pocitas runs along the coast, parallel to the old route of the Panamericana Norte. Out at sea, the cool Humboldt Current meets warmer water from the north, which is why the sea here is noticeably warmer than further south in Peru. Inland, dry hills rise, their slopes covered by Algarrobo trees, a species that survives on very little rain. Further north, these hills transition into the Cerros de Amotape National Park, which protects one of the last dry forests along the Pacific coast.
