Tortuga Lodge

There, where the Tortuguero River meets the Caribbean Sea, lies the Tortuga Lodge - one of the first lodges in the region and still one of the most personal today. Situated on a narrow strip of land between river, rainforest, and sea, you will find two-story wooden buildings in Caribbean-Victorian style, surrounded by extensive, plantation-like gardens. As one of the first accommodations in Tortuguero, the lodge has been focusing on sustainability for decades - with its own nature reserve, solar energy, and a solid network of local nature guides who accompany you on canoe trips through the canals, nighttime turtle tours, and hikes through the national park. No place in Costa Rica brings you as close to the green sea turtles that lay their eggs here between July and October.

Rooms

The 27 individually designed rooms and suites of the Tortuga Lodge are spread across two-story wooden buildings in Caribbean-Victorian style with views of the river or garden. Wraparound terraces with hammocks and rocking chairs invite you to linger, large windows let in the sounds of the rainforest - consciously without a television, but with a private bathroom and hot water.

Culinary

In the open, wall-less restaurant of the lodge, the team serves Caribbean-inspired fusion cuisine with a view of the Tortuguero River. Freshly prepared dishes with regional ingredients meet creative cocktails on the river terrace - especially at sunset, a fixed program point for lodge guests.

Activities

As the only lodge in Tortuguero with its own private nature reserve, Tortuga Lodge offers daily tours led by experienced nature guides: canoe trips through the canals in search of sloths, howler monkeys, and caimans, nighttime hikes to the nesting sites of the green sea turtle, as well as boat tours in the Tortuguero National Park. Those who prefer to enjoy the tranquility will find hammocks and a pool with river views in the lodge's gardens.

Location

The Tortuga Lodge is located on the northeastern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, directly on the Tortuguero River opposite the small landing strip of Tortuguero. Since no roads lead into the region, access is traditionally by boat or small plane - a part of the adventure. The Tortuguero National Park with its dense canal system begins right at the doorstep, the namesake village can be reached in about ten minutes by boat.
