Banyan Tree
Peace. Wellbeing. Privacy.
Founded in 1994 and today a global concept: Banyan Tree stands for spacious pool villas, retreat as a principle, and a spa idea that consciously thinks Asian instead of European. In 2009, the brand came to America for the first time – to Mayakoba on the Riviera Maya, where Asian architecture meets Mayan motifs and mangrove forests. In the Valle de Guadalupe, between vineyards and the rocks of Baja California, Banyan Tree tells the same story once again in a completely different way. Why we love the concept of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts even globally, we are happy to explain to you in more detail.
The idea behind the brand
Before Banyan Tree was a hotel name, it was a reclamation project. The founding couple Ho Kwon Ping and Claire Chiang bought a piece of coast in Phuket in the late 1980s, which had been left as an acidic, contaminated lunar landscape by a tin mine – the United Nations considered the site no longer cultivable. They did it anyway, over years and with great effort. From this experience comes a principle that still carries the brand today: A place must be left in a better state than you found it.
From the same construction site came what Banyan Tree is world-famous for today. Because there was no space left for a central hotel building with a shared pool on the damaged land, the founders instead built individual villas, each with its own pool. What was a pragmatic solution in 1994 is now standard across the luxury hotel industry – Banyan Tree invented it in Phuket.
An Asian sanctuary concept comes to Latin America
In 2009, the brand left Asia for the first time and opened its first house in America with Banyan Tree Mayakoba – right in the lagoon landscape of the Riviera Maya. The architecture is unmistakably Asian, but the craftsmanship is Mexican: motifs of Mayan culture, locally sourced materials, a team that combines Thai hospitality with Mexican warmth. What has emerged is not an imported resort, but a second, independent interpretation of the same sanctuary concept.
In the Valle de Guadalupe, this translation repeats itself once again in a completely different way. Instead of mangroves and Caribbean warmth: vineyards, rocks, and the dry expanse of Baja California. Under the Veya brand – Banyan Tree's wellbeing line – the same retreat idea meets Mexican wine instead of the sea.
Why we love Banyan Tree
The first reason is the pool villa itself, and this is out of conviction, not for marketing reasons: Almost every accommodation has its own pool, often a private garden, and no visual contact with neighbors. Retreat is not an added feature here, but the starting point of the planning.
The second reason is the spa. Banyan Tree consciously decided early against the European spa model and instead focused on Asian techniques – barefoot therapists trained in their own spa academy work according to a thoughtful idea rather than a treatment menu. Those who wish can book a multi-day program instead of a single massage.
For whom Banyan Tree is the right choice
Banyan Tree suits you if relaxation is the real reason for the trip. Couples find plenty of privacy here, solo travelers a structured program, and those who want to settle down after an intense round trip find the right counterbalance.
The brand is less suitable if you are looking for hustle and bustle, nightlife, or a packed excursion schedule. Banyan Tree is consciously calm – that’s by design, not chance.
Signature experiences
- Private pool villas: the category that Banyan Tree invented itself – private pool, garden, retreat without neighbors’ view
- Asian-inspired spa: therapists from their own spa academy, treatments according to Asian rather than European tradition
- Veya wellbeing: multi-day programs of movement, nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness
- Sustainability since the founding: the brand itself arose from a reclamation project – mangrove and reef protection, work with local communities have been part of the concept ever since
Our experience – and what we recommend
We recommend Banyan Tree as a place of tranquility – preferably at the end of a journey, for example, after you have explored Yucatán or Baja California. We particularly like:
- Banyan Tree Mayakoba – the first Banyan Tree address in America: villas by a lagoon in the mangrove forest, you travel to the restaurant by boat
- Banyan Tree Veya Valle de Guadalupe – wellbeing retreat between vineyards and rocks, just over two hours by car from the border near Tijuana
Both also function as pure wellness trips – we will put together the program according to the length of your stay.
